Raising capital to build a new home and secure The Plant Home endowment in perpetuity

The Plant Memorial Home in Bath, Maine is undertaking a 5+ million-dollar building project to double the number of assisted living apartments we provide for our elder residents.

The Plant Memorial Home is the only home of its type in the country.  We provide private assisted living apartments to all our residents, regardless of their ability to pay for their care.  Built in 1917 by Thomas Plant, founder of Queen Quality Shoes, the Plant Memorial Home is a not-for-profit 50,000 square foot estate with 37 assisted living apartments located on 17 acres on the banks of the Kennebec River in Bath, Maine.  Mr. Plant’s motivation to serve our elders was apparent in his dedication statement, which has become the Home’s vision:

“This home is founded on my sincere belief that those who have lived honest, industrious lives and are without means or friends to care for them, have earned the right to be cared for.  Only through the labor and expenditures of others is it possible.…”

The building project we are undertaking will increase the total number of apartments to 92.  The income from additional market-rate apartments will help us to stabilize the endowment so that we can continue to provide high-quality care to our elders without means.  This will effectively subsidize more apartments or more individuals at a higher level.
